The Effect of Industry-university Collaboration on Scientific Research at Universities: the Case of Advanced Materials

There are conflicting arguments that university-industry collaborations can potentially contribute to university s fundamental research. However, our quantitative analysis revealed: there are many different types of universityindustry collaborations and the impact on universities varies significantly depending on the specific form of the collaboration. In Japan, close collaboration including patent co-inventorship and paper co-authorship, exhibits positive effect on research productivity, but in US, the mode of collaboration has not yet to exhibit effect on research. Therefore, we can not make broad generalizations when we consider the pros and cons of collaboration from the perspective of promoting fundamental research.
